Knewitz Holzfass Chardonnay, Rheinhessen, Germany, 2018

About this wine

A superbly crafted Chardonnay which is full of citrus fruit and lightly buttered toast. The oak, from 1st, 2nd and 3rd fill barrels, is perfectly judged. A creaminess comes from long lees ageing. If you are looking for a wine that rivals Meursault and is much less expensive you must try this. Two brothers in their 20's now run this 20 hectare family estate and they are establishing a reputation for themselves, so buy now before they get well known (and prices go up).

"Lots of oak spice and mealiness on the nose. Creamy and textured on the palate, with the pure citrus fruit dominating the oak even though the oak is very present now. A lovely savoury, mealy creaminess on the palate. Fantastic value compared with burgundy. VGV" (JH) jancisrobinson.com

Note: VGV = very good value
